Snake bite!

Photobucket

We were almost home from our walk this morning when Gummi was bit by a snake.. It was our only poisonous, one the Common European Viper/Adder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vipera_berus). I gave him prednisolone right away to keep the swelling down (he was bit on the nose) and off to the vet where we he got some shots and he’ll be on pred and antibiotics for a while.. Unless he suddenly appears ill now in the beginning he’ll probably be okay, though kidney issues and heart issues can turn up after a while.. I have to keep him calm for at least a week, now that will be a challenge!

I’m not feeling so good, Mom, I think I’ll just lie down for a while..

Please keep your paws and finger crossed he won’t have any after effects! At least we had a good two hours in the woods before it happened, so he’ll be okay inside for today at least. 😉

  4. Oh you pooor dear! I am so sorry to hear that you were bit by a nasty snake. The mom here hates the snakes. I am sending good thoughts and purrs that the medicine works and you will be back to your ole self soon. Please be careful when walking in the woods.

  5. We also saw your post on DWB and wanted to let you know that we are crossing our paws and saying extra prayers that Gummi has a full recovery. Our mom HATES snakes and this is one of the reasons why.

  6. Oh no….So sorry to hear about this. Snakes are really scary creatures. Me and my pack all have our paws crossed that you won’t have any problems at all from this.

  7. -We have lots of poisonous snakes here in Arizona — thank dog I have never met one, although mum did have a close encounter (at a friend’s house a rattler was curled up between the paving stones and she stepped over it!!!). Anyway, I have my paws crossed and so have my kitty sisters and my mum.

  8. Mango sent us over. We hope you’re all right, Gummi. Almost all of the snakes here are venomous…so we’re not allowed near grass in the summer. Sending you powerful healing vibes.

  10. We had a Lab/Golden mix that was bit by a Copperhead (in Carolina). We got immediate vet care for her and we were very worried that she might not make it. But she did! And we are very much hoping for Gummi to be fine too, with no other issues. One friend told us that if a snake has recently bit something, that they might be low on venom and won’t do the second bite too much damage. I am not sure about this but it made us hopeful.

  12. Gummi! We are sending strong POTP your way. Our brother Gizmo was bitten by a rattle snake once and recovered beautifully. Our vet kept an eye on his liver enzymes the week following the bite, but all turned out well. Stay away from shiny sticks!!

  13. Mango sent us. All ten if us have our paws crossed that he’s all better soon with no bad effects. Mom always worries about us finding a snake so she is sending good wishes, too.
